Swarachakra Tamil (ஸ்வரச்சக்ரா தமிழ்) is a touch-screen keyboard designed for inputting Tamil text. Additionally, Swarachakra is available for several other languages including Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Punjabi, Bengali, and Konkani. The design of Swarachakra is organized logically in accordance with the structure of the Tamil script, featuring consonants arranged by their logical sequence—similar to educational materials found in schools.

Typing with Swarachakra

Type combinations in Tamil often require pairing a consonant (e.g., க) with a matra (e.g., இ). For instance, க + ி equals கி. Upon selecting a consonant, a chakra appears showcasing various combinations of consonants along with the ten most commonly used matras (கா, கி, கீ, கு, கூ, கெ, கே, கை...). This chakra presents a preview of potential character combinations; users can simply slide their stylus or finger towards the desired option. A separate chakra on the bottom right displays complete vowels (அ, ஆ, இ, ஈ, உ, ஊ, எ, ஏ, ஐ...), while less frequently used vowels and matras are accessible nearby (ஔ, ௌ, ஃ). Additional numerals and symbols can be found via a shift option, and there is also the flexibility to switch temporarily to a QWERTY keypad for English input.

Installing Swarachakra

The installation process for Swarachakra Tamil is straightforward. Begin by selecting the “Install” button to initiate installation. Subsequently, you must enable the keyboard by accessing “Settings”, navigating to “Language and Input”, and checking the box next to ஸ்வரச்சக்ரா தமிழ் in the “Keyboard and input methods” section. Finally, you will need to set it as the default keyboard by selecting the “Default” option within the same section.
